Tri-Star Vending was founded in 1990 as a part-time venture. Gross sales were just over $2,000.00 per month and income was to be directed to assist my youngest son, Kevin, as he was about to attend UCI. All accounts were in the Irvine area.
In a very short time, sales doubled and continued to double every six months. It was becoming apparent that this could be a full time operation for the Yamauchi family. With the help of oldest son, David, the business continued growing as accounts began to spread throughout Southern Calif. Today we cover L.A., Orange, and Riverside counties.
In 1998 we hired our first employee outside the family and now have a crew of 13 managed by my two sons David and Trent. Over the years we have hired several employees from Homeboy, Inc. and these “former gang members” have turned out to be our best employees! We are very proud of their transition.
Each year from 1998 to 2005 we have experienced double-digit growth and most of this new business has been obtained from word of mouth referrals. We are contracted by 9 cities, several high schools, and service JPL and Cal Tech College. One other prominent account is the Yahoo! Search headquarters in Burbank.
Personally I have been very involved in community service even before being elected to the Alhambra City Council. I was past-president of the Rotary Club, Alhambra Chamber of Commerce, and WSGV YMCA. I was also a HUD Commissioner and member of the City Planning Commission. Outside of Alhambra, I serve on the Board of Directors of the ELAC Foundation, vice-president of the L.A. Music & Art School Board of Trustees, and Board Member of the California Automatic Vending Council. I am also a great supporter of the “Go For Broke Foundation”, Japanese American National Museum, and Homeboy, Inc. Currently I serve as Vice-Mayor of the City of Alhambra.
