Executive Director’s Report Dennis J. Huang
Spring 2008
2/1/2008
There have been talks about recession among experts, economists and business people. Factors such as the weak dollar, decline in the housing market and the economic stimulus package also suggest such direction. So what does this mean to you? How does it apply to you personally and to your business? True entrepreneurs are actually very optimistic in these conditions.

Despite our current economy, business opportunities continue to be discovered everyday. Entrepreneurs thrive in these conditions because individuals have the ability to contribute to improve our community. This is the moment when your time is more flexible. Better planning, expanded network and skills development can better position your business to future success. Peter F. Drucker said to a group of IBM executives in 1968, “The success and ultimately the survival of every business, large or small, depend in the last analysis on its ability to develop people.”

Businesses cannot afford not to get involved in developing themselves and their people. Formal education, workshops and seminars are additional opportunities that allow businesses to better themselves. Small Business Development Centers and SCORE are just a few organizations that can also assist your business. Inspiration and breakthrough ideas can come from networking events and educational forums produced by community based organizations such as the ABA and other organizations. Getting involved in the industry and business organizations is a must. Become a member and volunteer.

Big businesses cannot prosper without small businesses to supply its needs and buy its products. Reach out and develop your prospects now. Be innovative. Ideas can change the size of your bank account and can change the world. Many programs developed by ABA are geared to assist you in reaching that goal. When the economy turns, you’ll be first in line.

Welcome new Board Directors
ABA is excited to add three new members to its Board. Bill Imada, CEO of IW Group Inc., Andy Wong, Regional President of Wells Fargo and Ronald Wong, President of Imprenta Communication Group. “We are honored and thrilled about the new board dynamic”, said Joseph Jou, ABA Past Chairman, “This new board make up will continue to build strong programs for ABA, and it will also give more resources and empower the Asian business community.” Please congratulate our new directors and meet them at our upcoming events.

In Memory of Michael Carney (1953-2008)
For the little time Michael Carney (AT&T) spent with the Asian Business Association on the Advisory Council, he made such a big impact on us. He will always be remembered for his sharp attire, fun and energetic personality, optimistic outlook in life and dynamic leadership. Michael’s personal commitment to community and volunteerism will also be truly missed. Thank you, Michael, for enriching and touching many of our lives.

Annual Strategic Planning Retreat
Every year, ABA board directors and advisory council volunteer their time to discuss and map out the direction for our association. On the weekend of January 12, 2008, the group met at Pala Mesa Resort in Fallbrook. The dialogues focused mostly on attracting more members, training and educating members and getting them more involved in ABA programs and functions. Another area of focus will be developing a better relationship with the local and state governments through advocacy and identifying issues that affect small businesses.

Golf Tournament
Get out and support ABA through a fun and exciting event. This year’s golf tournament will be a milestone for ABA. The 10th Annual Golf Tournament will be held on Monday, March 31, 2008 at Old Ranch Country Club. “We are consistently involved with ABA’s golf tournament because it is an opportunity to expand our network and have fun at the same time,” said Linda Young (Tailored Baskets), Tournament co-chair. The event will continue to have a Honda Hole-In-One, closest to the pin and putting contests. Many participants can look forward to goodie bags, In-N-Out catered luncheon, raffle prizes and fabulous silent auction items. Khin Vong (California Bank & Trust), Tournament co-chair, commented, “I’ve always enjoyed hosting my clients at the ABA tournaments. Some of them now support the event because it’s so much fun!”
